How long have the music coordinators for Mad Men (best job ever, btw) been keeping “He Hit Me” in their pockets? However long they held out, it was worth it, as it added a perfectly creepy exclamation point to the only episode of Mad Men that’s made me triple-check to make sure my doors were locked. If you want an extra jolt of that creepiness again, listen to this song while reading about the student nurse murders. {shudder}
When the slinking bassline kicked in, I got ready to sing along, but I also turned to watch my wife’s face when she heard the first lines. “What a horrible song!” I mean, it’s a great song, but those lyrics? Never heard those on the oldies stations, eh? WONDER WHY.
Grizzly Bear’s version is even better (and creepier, especially with those slashing guitars), and somehow, it makes the lyrics a little easier to take when they’re coming from a gay man. I wish that it was this version that capped off last night’s episode, being the same kind of musical anachronism that the Decemberists’ “The Infanta” was in season two.
