“Oblivion” by Grimes had sat in my library, listened to a couple of times, but never really paid much mind. Then a friend told me to watch the video, said he couldn’t stop watching it, said it was easily his favorite video of the year. So I watched, because I can’t resist hype like that, and…well, it’s not really that special. It’s kind of awkward, in fact.
But a) it’s somehow hypnotizing and b) it’s made me realize what an amazing song this is. In the months before last Monday, I’d listened to the song about twice, but since then, I’ve listened to it a couple dozen. Is it her cute dance that underscores what a great track it is? Is it seeing her in her Sailor Moon-style outfit (note: I may be using Sailor Moon wrong here) moshing with a bunch of shirtless guys at a house party that calls out that awesome synth line at the end? Is it watching the lip synching that made me realize how great the quick rhythm of the vocals are? I DON’T KNOW. And as I hit replay yet again, I don’t care.
Side note to the people who watched Friday Night Lights: she’s totally Julie Taylor’s artsy sister. Right?!
